# 58 - Meet Steve Mc Curry - Done

When I came to America in 1989 my father worked for a man who subscribed to the National Geographic magazines and hardly ever threw out an issue. He gave my father all the copies and my father then gave them to me. I didn’t know how to read in English so the pictures were all I could look at. I fell in love with all the beautiful photographs, in particularly Steve Mc Curry’s work. I truly became a fan of his work when I came across the photo with the Afghan girl on the front cover. I started following his work ever since. I became infatuated with the tribe where women wear the rings on their necks which he has photographed the original tribe. Years later, once I learned English a bit, I remember watching the documentary where he was on a mission to find the afghan girl and photograph her again. His work has been an inspiration. The love for color photography is absolutely beautiful and it’s probably why I only love color photography so much. The more vibrant the colors are, the better. The more exotic the location is, the better. For many years Steve Mc Curry has been my idol and I absolutely love the stories behind the people he photographed and the connection he had with each one.

This weekend I had a three day workshop with Steve Mc Curry and his amazing crew. The first day, Friday, we went around the room and showed our portfolio. It was amazing to know that he looked at my photos. I do wish he was a bit more critical with my photos. I want the dirty truth of how bad (or good) my photos were. But I think he was holding back since we weren't professional photographers. That night we went through Steve’s photographs and their stories. The next day we were out in the city shooting anything we could find interesting. It was hard asking people to pose, but after couple of rejections (and some nasty comments) I had more confidence than I though existed. By the end of the day I was running up to people like i knew them all my life and asking them if I could shoot them. Having my one-on-one with Seth (the crew) allowed me to find ways to get the subjects attention. He was extremely good on finding a person and automatically bonding with him/her, where I would normally be too shy to approach that person. Shortly after shooting with Seth I had my one-on-one with the one and only, Steve Mc Curry. He shot quite a bit of me, which I wasn’t expecting. Then he allowed me to shoot him a little and I wish I could do it again because I wasn’t really thinking straight. I was too nervous around him to take him to a better background or ask some good questions.

He’s very down to earth and has an interesting sense of humor. I walked away with many great ideas and a stronger love for photography.

(note: I know that there is no space between Mc and Curry - I did this on purpose.  When you search for his name, which a lot of people do, the results will not show my blog.

# 4 - Travel to Spain - Done

Spain was a great time! I went with my friend Liany who is fun to travel with. We went to Barcelona and Valencia. We also had tickets to Italy for one day but we missed the flight, so we stayed in Barcelona.

This was my first international trip (not including Poland to America move) so this trip just made me want to travel more. I got bit by the travel bug.

But now I want to visit places that are more exotic. Like India. I think this will be my next trip.

I purchased the painting on the right (the jazz player)

# 86 - Fix my teeth - Done

This may be strange to have on someones top things to do in life, but with a little history it's understandable.

When I came to America (I was 10 years old) I went to a dentist for a root canal (emergency visit). To save money (since I didn’t have insurance) my parents took me to a dentist that probably was not qualified to do root canals, or any dental work in that matter. I woke up the next morning with an infection on both sides of my mouth that looked like I had two golf balls on each side of my cheek all the way up to my eyes. I went to the emergency room and after they removed couple of my teeth from each side and the infection and told me I’m lucky to be alive from the infection I decided to skip the dentist from now on. I was actually petrified of the dentist.

Of course not going to the dentist for the next 10 to 15 years and having a sweet tooth took a toll on my mouth. About 40 thousand dollars, 6 implants, bone replacements, root canals, cavity filling and other procedures that I just don’t know the name of, my smile is once again a smile. I found a dentist that I am attached to who has taken care of this mess and after a 3 year process, I now just do my 6 month check ups. So fix my teeth is done Laughing wheew!

# 27 - Create your own website - Done

It's called www.magdalenaphoto.com

I made it as a personal, family album website at first, but now I'm changing it into a professional website.

Hopefully this is just a begining of me becoming a professional photographer

# 36 - Write a biography - Done

I started writing my biography before I got married and 25 pages later (typed, single spaced) it's still going strong. I add to it when something new happens in my life or if I remember a part of my childhood that's worth remember in the future.

This biography is my own proof of life and for only me to see. I'm glad I did it -you never know what happens in life, and having a biography allows you to document your life in a non-fictional way.

# 80 - See a volcano - Done

On my honeymoon, my husband and I went to the Big Island (Hawaii) and there we took a helicopter tour around the Island, we did the Rainforest/volcano tour. We were lucky enough to actually see some volcano action. The helicopter went really low which was a bit scary since the volcano kept getting higher during its eruption. What a wonderful view!

# 7 - Get a fitness license & teach classes - Done

My friend Ladesia told me about this program where I can learn how to teach aerobics for free as long as I teach aerobics for free for the following six months after my certification. It was a 12 month program in Harlem NY, and it was a lot of fun. You study for an hour and then you learn a routine for the next hour once a week for six months. After your six months are over, you take a test and you are a certified aerobics instructor.

I actually tough a class with real students in it! ok, so some were 80 years old, but I had a few that were in their 20's! :) And I was kicking butt! I have my own routine and everyone was actually sweating at the end. I even put some kickboxing into the routine! It was great!

I taught hi-low aerobics for six months and it was a wonderful six months! During the time I was teaching aerobics; I also worked full time and went to college full time. I had the best body ever from the workouts, and more energy than you can imagine from working and going to school and then teaching aerobics.
Once my 6 months of teaching were over and I had the opportunity to get paid for it, I chose to leave. For some strange reason, teaching aerobics at a free recreation center was more rewarding than teaching at Lucille Roberts or other gyms and getting paid for it

# 29 - Get a bartending license - Done

I took a week off from work and attending bartending classes. It was fun, but that's as far as I went with it. If the business world doesn't work out for me, I can always make some delish shots :)
